The scenic project called “Personification. Hong Kong” was inspired by the artist’s impression from his trip to Hong Kong. The world of contemporary architecture of the Eastern dragon with its skyscrapers were combined by the artist with the ideas of the avant-garde art; the cubic volume of office centers and towers were seen through the prism of Malevich’ squares. Individuality versus seriality, square man and a man in a cube, freedom and totality - these are the questions presented by Platon Petrov in his new project.

Square people/cyborgs/transformers with heads of Kitty, Mao, or Dragon… They are the combination of recognizable promotional advertising and travel images dating back to the dramatic shift in art of the 1960s: from pop art to minimalism. Platon is not afraid to join images of different origin. Such return to the total hi-tech architecture and design in human shape does not seem deliberate. The constructor implies the universality of modular forms. Platon’s leaking rectangles or his cubic men are presented as a thinking form, in a shape of a thinking body. These shapes or the combinations of shapes look quite spiritual.

Art is a dimension where there are a lot of symbols, magic, and ideas. In the works of Platon Petrov the symbol is minimized. It is so minimalistic, so encrypted, that it is sometimes difficult to notice; however, it exists in every of his pictures. The artist gives everyone the opportunity to find their own meaning and to put together the puzzle.
